ELD Compliance &
Decertification Guide

Everything Louisiana and Gulf Coast carriers need to know about Electronic Logging Device requirements, the 2026 decertification wave, and how to stay road-ready.

Action Required by April 14, 2026: FMCSA removed 25+ ELD devices from its registered list in early 2026. Carriers using decertified devices are subject to immediate out-of-service orders at roadside inspections. Check your device now.

What is an ELD & who needs one?

An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) automatically records a commercial driver’s Hours of Service (HOS) data by connecting to the vehicle’s engine. The FMCSA ELD mandate requires most commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers who are required to maintain Records of Duty Status (RODS) to use a certified ELD.

You are required to use an ELD if you operate a CMV in interstate commerce and are currently required to maintain RODS — this includes most trucks with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs operating across state lines.

Exemptions include: short-haul drivers who qualify for the timecard exception, drivers using paper RODS for 8 or fewer days in a 30-day period, and driveaway-towaway operations.

Key Penalties for Non-Compliance

Out of Service
Driver placed out of service immediately at roadside
CSA Score Impact
Violations damage carrier safety scores for 24+ months
Fines
